Canary Wharf
The prime driver of London’s recent economic success, Canary Wharf has already nearly one third of the employment in the London Thames Gateway. It is the foremost financial districts in Europe and home to many of the world’s most successful financial organisations.
Canary Wharf is where the Thames Gateway begins and, since 1988 when the first foundations were laid, it has grown into a thriving financial centre. Already home to nearly 100,000 companies like HSBC, Clifford Chance and Reuters, it is the ideal location for banking, corporate or media offices in the Gateway.
Extending over 97 acres, Canary Wharf has been designed with an emphasis on creating a pleasant working environment. Careful attention has been given to the provision of public open spaces, including parks, squares and promenades. Approximately 14.1 million sq ft of office and retail space has been constructed to date, housing a full range of shops and services, with more currently being developed under Canada Square.
The first tenants moved into Canary Wharf in 1991, but now over 90,000 people work here. Currently, the Canary Wharf development comprises over 30 completed buildings and over 200 shops, bars and restaurants within four retail malls. It also has a conference and banqueting centre, two Dockland Light Railway stations, a Jubilee Line station, car parks and approximately 20 acres of landscaped open spaces. Visitors can enjoy going to the bars and restaurants on the promenades and, within the retail areas, visiting the numerous shops and boutiques, as well as enjoying the on-going arts and events activities.
Wood Wharf, immediately to the east of Canary Wharf, is one of the largest urban projects in London. It is a £3 billion mixed-use scheme to deliver 4.9 million sq ft of office space in six commercial towers, and over 1,600 homes in six residential buildings.
Expected to double over the next 20 years, Canary Wharf is forecast to double in size. With easy access to central London and the Thames Gateway, coupled with the completion of the new Crossrail link to the City and Heathrow in the near future, Canary Wharf is the perfect location within the Thames Gateway for blue chip, financial organisations.
