Kent Thameside
Kent Thameside in the Thames Gateway is the location of choice for major pharma players such as Abbott and GSK. Comprising of the urban areas of Dartford and Gravesham north of the A2, directly located within the Thames Gateway, the new Nucleus facility at Dartford which covers 30,000 sq.ft. in this prime, accessible location and has been identified as a possible location for the Life Sciences sector.
Kent Thameside – Abbott Laboratories
Abbott Laboratories has a major £39 million biotechnology facility at its Murex manufacturing plant in Dartford, Kent. The plant will created 125 new jobs, increasing Abbott's Dartford-based workforce by over 40% to 410 employees. The investment expanded the Dartford site's role as a key international manufacturing site for the company.
Murex already plays a leading role in Abbott's global operations, manufacturing a range of diagnostic products for testing blood for infectious diseases, in particular tests for HIV and hepatitis. The Dartford facility is responsible for the initial stage of manufacture of 63 additional products used in testing for medical conditions such as cancer, thyroid, hepatitis/retrovirus, cardiovascular, fertility/pregnancy, transplant and metabolic diseases.
The Dartford site is equipped with some of the world's leading diagnostics technologies and automated biotechnology manufacturing processes, including remote system monitoring by employees.
Kent Thameside – GSK
GSK’s site within the Thames Gateway is at Dartford in Kent, the county known as the Garden of England. Close to the largest shopping centre in the UK – Bluewater, the site has easy train access into London and is also situated close to the new Ebbsfleet International Station, giving fast, easy access to the Continent.
The site is located within walking distance of the town centre and very close to residential neighbours with whom GSK enjoys great industrial relations through active participation in the local community projects.

Kent Thameside encompasses the thriving town centres of Dartford and Gravesend, plus Bluewater, Ebbsfleet International and Ebbsfleet Valley – identified as one of four ‘transformational’ projects in the Thames Gateway.
