Around the world, countries, states, cities and regions are fighting a
fierce battle for investment spend and this report examines the role that transport plays in this fight. Canary Wharf is a prime driver of the Thames Gateway’s recent economic success and is a thriving space and vibrant retail business district with a wide range of shops, restaurants, pubs and wine bars, as well as healthcare and leisure facilities and an extensive arts and events programme.
Stratford City, a major retail and transport hub within the Thames Gateway, is the proposed prime location for a new state-of-the-art shopping centre experience, due to start construction later this year.
Greenwich Peninsula is going to be busy - with residents, people working here, visitors to The O2 and passengers using the transport interchange. It all adds up to a huge retail opportunity.
Opening in 1990 in the Thames Gateway region, Lakeside was the first regional shopping centre in the South of England and now, together with the adjoining Retail Park, forms one of the largest shopping areas in Europe. The shopping centre offers a comprehensive selection of retail brands which are complemented with a wide range of cafés and restaurants and a multi-screen cinema, all playing their part in Lakeside's success in attracting shoppers throughout the day and late into the evening.
Basildon, a key location within the Thames Gateway, is a priority area for development and the commercial centre of South Essex with a broad, thriving industrial base and prestigious shopping centre. More than 2,000 manufacturing, construction and service companies, plus hundreds of stores and shops, successfully operate here.
Dockside Outlet Centre at Chatham Maritime in the heart of the Thames Gateway features more than 80 shops and restaurants. High Street names including Pilot, Thornton’s, Cadbury’s, Antler, Mexx and Clarks are just some of the stores that can be found here. The Centre is located in the former Boiler Shop, where boilers were originally made ready to be installed in the ships being built at Chatham Dockyard. Many of the building’s original features have been retained, including the iconic clock tower.
Swale, a key area within the Thames Gateway covering the Isle of Sheppey and Sittingbourne, has a number of outstanding developments with major retailers including Aldi, Morrison’s Lidl’s currently underway.
Bluewater is one of Europe's largest and most innovative retail and leisure destinations. Within its first 12 months of trading, Bluewater changed the face of retailing in the UK and became the benchmark for quality British retailing, winning a multitude of international awards including a Millennium Product mark.Bluewater has successfully combined retail and leisure to offer a day out destination. Bluewater's average Guest spends around three hours at Bluewater, and 98% of Guests surveyed in exit polls say their visit is highly enjoyable.
Southend-on-Sea, situated at the mouth of the Thames Estuary within the Thames Gateway, has long been a favourite coastal resort with its close proximity to London. Famous for its record breaking Pier and sandy beach, the Town also has a huge range of attractions to offer, including its newly developed Town Centre and retail outlets.
