London Olympic and Paralympic Games

Imagine the excitement of living and working in the area in the run up to the Games and the fantastic sporting legacy it will leave the region

Olympic Park 2010The building of the Olympic Park in Stratford for the London Olympic and Paralympic Games is set to completely transform the heart of East London.

Thriving urban parkland

At the heart of the development will be 100 hectares of landscaped parkland, combining centuries of British park design with ground-breaking green technology. It will be a truly 21st Century urban park, and the largest created in Europe for 150 years. 9 distinct areas will include meadows, wetlands, orchards, allotments, lawns for events and festivals, and facilities for canoeing, climbing, mountain biking and cricket – all connected with new cycle ways and footpaths. The park will form a stunning backdrop for the Games, and a superb visitor and community leisure destination for years to come.

World class sporting facilities

Several new and exciting world class venues are being built which will be adapted for use by sports clubs and the local community as a legacy of the Games. Examples include the Aquatics Centre for swimming, diving and waterpolo and a 3,000-seat VeloPark with adjacent BMX circuit, road cycle circuit and mountain bike course. Alongside these landmark venues, new playing fields and recreation centres will be created for community use. The whole area will be a magnet for sport and activity lovers at all levels – from professional teams to local clubs.

New affordable homes

The Olympic Village is being built for athletes and officials during the Games, alongside riverside shops, restaurants and cafes for the whole community to use. After 2012, 9000 homes will be made available for the public. Many of the homes will be dedicated for key workers such as teachers and nurses.

Great transport connections

Many improvements to the local transport infrastructure will help to open up East London and transform the Lower Lea Valley into one of the best connected areas of the capital. In addition, new networks of canal towpaths, footpaths and cycle-ways will provide local residents with the best possible access to open spaces, and the new sporting, residential and shopping facilities.
